“This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.” – John 15:12 (KJV)
Love is not only an action, but it is also a choice. The above Scripture is best understood when we think about the love God has for His creation (us). Man Fell and severed his connection with the Holy and True Living God. However, God loves us so much that He enacted a Plan B and sent His Son, Jesus, to reconcile us back to Him through His sacrifice on the cross at Calvary.
This was a choice considering the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, “…not my will, but thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42 – KJV). It was sacrificial love that took Him to the cross. 1st John 3:16 tells us, ‘by this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.’
Moreover, 1st John 4:9-11 speaks to us of His love being manifested toward us. This love enables us to love others even when they are unlovable, to forgive others when they hurt us, and to empathise with others when needed.
By demonstrating love to others, we allow them to recognise that we are children of God. Love is our guiding principle, so let us be intentional and follow the words penned in 1st John 4:21 (KJV): “And this commandment have we from Him, that he who loveth God love his brother also.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please give me a heart to love not only when it is easy but even when it is most difficult. Just as You agonisingly fulfilled Your purpose, give me the strength to walk in Your footsteps and fulfil my purpose in this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
